season pass [Wed, 18-Nov-2009 8:25 PM]
[Tags|, , ]
[music |Ab Ovo -- Nocturlabe]

I find that I barely watch actual movies any more, because they all suck. But Sleep Dealer was fantastic, and you should watch it at once. It reminded me of Varley's Blue Champagne mixed with Haldeman's Forever Peace.

Also Moon was really good.

I can't actually remember any other movies I saw this year that I enjoyed. (Oh, Up. That was cute.)

Then there's the televisions.

The Prisoner This was kind of amazing. Ian McKellen does a fantastic Mr. Roarke, it's very surreal, and the final reveal of what's really going on was interesting and something I hadn't seen before.

Flash Forward I've been enjoying this. It feels like Lost but with less of the bullshit. I read the book it was based on which is ok (but not great). I think the changes the show has made from the book have actually improved matters, which is unusual.

Stargate Universe     I almost hated the first episode ("Did I really watch two hours whose plot was 'find the broken window'?"), but it grew on me. They're addressing the resource-scarcity of the stranded crew more than any similar shows have, and there's a lot less comedy than in the other Stargate shows. I hope that the magic "talk to Earth" rocks stop working soon. It would be much more intense without that lifeline. Also, Lou Diamond Phillips is annoying.

V To my great surprise, this has been not-terrible so far. I expected to hate it, because "hate" is the only sensible reaction to a (purportedly) science fiction show that features a priest as one of its main characters. That tells you that the writers expect to do a lot of hand-wringing about "faith" versus "science" (or as I like to call it, "reality"). Fortunately, this priest doesn't actually seem to be very interested in priesting, so that's been ok so far. I enjoyed the David Icke-isms, and that they didn't bother beating around the bush about getting the resistance going.

Dollhouse This show followed the same pattern that Buffy did: the entire first season was slow-moving poorly-plotted terribly-acted garbage, and then he pulled it out of the crapper for the last two episodes of the season, which were like they were from a different show entirely. Season 2 has been much better than season 1, but of course now it's going to be cancelled (again). If you end up watching any of this, fast-forward through an episode or two from season one, then watch the two parter finale in 11 and 12, plus the future-apocalypse episode 13 (which never aired, because it's the best episode of the whole series, and you wouldn't want anyone to actually see that.)

House I grudgingly admit that a doctor show can be worth my time.

Castle I grudgingly admit that a cop show can be worth my time. But only because Nathan Fillion is fun to watch. The actual plots are completely unmemorable.

The Venture Brothers   This season is not wowwing me so far.
Dexter Fading. But still good.
Californication Consistently hilarious.
30 Rock Consistently hilarious.
Supernatural Often dumb. Occasionally hilarious.

Why am I still watching this crap:

Heroes Apparently something went wrong with Tivo and I missed almost an entire season. And yet, apparently I missed nothing, except an explanation of why Whiny Blonde's power changed, and why Indian Dude isn't a lizardman any more. (Things about which I apparently don't even remotely care.)

Sanctuary I watch most of this in fast forward or while playing games on my phone.
Fringe Well, it's not as bad as Sanctuary.
Lost Isn't it over yet? If I could fast-forward to the series finale episode, I'd do that right now.
True Blood Season 2 was a lot better than season 1. Faint praise.

Eagerly awaiting more of:

Mad Men
United States of Tara
Weeds
Doctor Who Though the xmas special sucked.
Leverage
Burn Notice

[music |The Coathangers -- Stop Stomp Stompin']

I wish there was Mythbusters feed that omitted the interminably long and redundant "coming up next!" and "before the break!" bits. Do they think that people only watch the show accidentally while channel-surfing? I think it's a 20 minute show that they pad to an hour. (Ok, 42 minutes plus commercials.)

stupid tivo. [Fri, 31-Jul-2009 6:39 PM]

[music |Au Revoir Simone -- Hurricanes]

So, my Tivo started freaking out, and in a weird way. Playback of already-recorded stuff was fine, but new recordings and live TV were stuttery (going black for 1 second every 6), and sometimes it would seem to momentarily forget that the crypto card was plugged in. Since this sounded a little more like a hardware problem than a bad drive, I took a chance and bought a new (used) DirecTivo of the same hardware vintage off eBay (it was only $60 including shipping, so what the hell). But, when I moved my old drive into the new box, it didn't boot. Just sits there at the "Tivo is powering up" screen forever.

Which leaves me with some options.

  1. Use the drive from the new tivo. This will probably work, but the downsides are: A) I lose all the old recordings I have not yet watched, B) it's a smaller drive, C) it doesn't have any of the hacks installed like the web server or the ability to talk to ethernet instead of a phone line.

  2. Get a new drive and re-hack the new tivo from scratch. Downsides: A) lose my old recordings, B) Doing this is hellaciously complicated. It took two of us days to figure it out last time. I'm really not looking forward to doing that again. Is there some dead-simple way to do this that involves only using a Mac, and does not involve lugging home and tearing apart some random PC, and does not involve digging through a dozen years-old, wrong, un-cross-referenced pages on that despicable "Deal Database" site?

  3. Cancel my DirecTV subscription and just torrent everything from now on. Downside: it's not very automatic. I liked being able to just give Tivo a list of program names and have the new, unwatched episodes just show up with no manual intervention or record-keeping on my part.

What are your recommendations here, oh Lazyweb?

Update: For the record, to move a drive from one Tivo to another of the same hardware vintage, you have to: A) pay DirecTV $20 for a new access card (you can't move them) and then B) run the 51killer.tcl script to tell the Tivo app that it's ok that the crypto key has changed (without this, it will give an error #51 every time it wants to record a program, even though crypto is turned off.)

I have a theory about time travel. [Sun, 10-May-2009 3:58 PM]

[music |Art of Noise -- A Time For Fear]

My theory about time travel is as follows:

If your story is not about time travel, but it has time travel in it, then your story sucks.

For example. Stories that are about time travel:
Terminator, Back to the Future, Time Bandits, Bill & Ted, 12 Monkeys, Journeyman.
Their use of time travel is, at least, honest.

Stories that are not about time travel:
Star Trek, Stargate, Lost, Heroes.
Their use of time travel is a crutch or a gag, and all of their time travel episodes are stupid.

[music |Belly -- White Belly (Demo)]

Can someone please explain to me why they apparently photoshopped out Gabrielle Anwar's belly button in about half of the scenes it would have been visible in in the latest episode of Burn Notice?

It was way more obvious in video than it is in these stills. It's not just lighting. It's "what the fuck that woman has no navel."

For a show that is about attention to detail, the title sequence to Dexter drives me crazy. It opens with him shaving in spooky macro, but by the time he's done spookily making breakfast, he has three days of stubble. Come on, dude. Keep your story straight.

season pass [Wed, 22-Oct-2008 12:14 AM]
[Tags|, ]
[music |Massive Attack -- Collar Stays On]

Pushing Daisies Still fantastic. Perhaps not as good as season 1, but still great. Certainly the most surreal thing to be on network TV since... Twin Peaks, I guess.
Sarah Connor Chronicles I wasn't enjoying the first few episodes of season 2 as much as I enjoyed season 1, mostly because I was really bothered by the Shirley Manson character. I was just not buying it. But with the combination of "Allison from Palmdale" and last week's episode ("The Tower", where Manson's daughter goes to the shrink) I think I see where they're going, and they've redeemed it for me.

I'm still not buying the presence of T-1000 technology in this timeline, though. The T-1000 tech was only able to exist because of the boostrapping technology transfer left behind at the end of T1, and that problem was eliminated by the events of T2, as evidenced by the tech present in T3. So they've got some 'splaining to do before I stop scowling about this one.

And it still bugs me that they never explained how the Cromartie head came through the time bubble without being encased in skin.

Heroes Wow, this season completely sucks, even in comparison to the previous season. I don't give a shit about any of the characters even a little bit. Again, even in comparison to the previous season.
Mad Men I just watched this from the beginning, and I'm totally hooked. It didn't sound like something that would interest me at all, but it's great. The best part is how apocalyptic it is: you can tell that the consensual reality all these people have imagined up for themselves is about to come crashing down, badly. Oh, do read this awesomely obsessive critique of the fonts and props used in the show.
Californication Still enjoying this. It's dumb but funny.
Dexter Still great. I'm less enthralled by the voiceover this season, as a result of Dexter becoming more "human". Generally I hate voiceovers: I think they're almost always a terrible filmmaking crutch. Show, don't tell. Film is visual, and there are plenty of good ways to show internal mental state without turning a visual medium into a radio play. But the beauty of the voiceover in (early) Dexter was that it showed how what he was thinking was in complete opposition to the way he was acting, and that impressed me. But it's less true this season.
Sanctuary This show is bullshit.
True Blood This show is bullshit. It's a trailer-park soap opera that just happens to have vampires. And because that wasn't enough, also a psychic. And they can't decide if the vampires have a physical explanation or are just "magic". I can't tell any of the male characters apart. They look the same and have interchangable personalities (except the vampire is broodier).
Primeval This show is bullshit. But I'm curious about what their explanation of the mechanics of their universe is, so mostly I watch it in fast-forward, to get the mythology breadcrumbs while skipping over the "drama" among various despicable characters.
Supernatural I'm only still watching this because [info]kfringe keeps telling me that it's actually a live-action version of The Venture Brothers, and I keep watching and trying to understand what the hell he's talking about. The first couple of seasons, where it was all "monster of the week", were mind-blowingly awful, but now that they've got a longer arc going, it's a bit better. And the Oktoberfest with vampires episode was pretty funny.
Fringe This show is just deplorable. Everyone says it's ripping off X Files, but if so, they mean it's ripping off the Doggett/Reyes X Files. It seems to me more like it's a remake of Strange World, which was a much better show.
Eagerly awaiting more of:
Weeds I still get a big kick out of this. It's just batshit insane.
The Middleman You really ought to obtain a copy of season 1. It's very funny. It's the same basic idea as Men In Black, but more screwball, and with fantastic intentionally-stilted dialog.
The Gong Show with Dave Attell You're not going to believe me when I tell you that this show is fantastic, but it is. Cookie Mongoloid was on! And a guy who balanced a full-sized lawnmower above his head by the handle while his assistant chucked cabbages into the blades.
Battlestar Galactica Spoiler alert: "This isn't Earth! It's New Jersey!"

WTF, Tivo! [Tue, 23-Sep-2008 1:33 PM]
[Tags|, ]
[music |The Ting Tings -- Fruit Machine]

Dammit! I have a years-old season pass for Heroes ("KTNV, All, First Run") and it didn't record. When I click on the season pass, it shows "no upcoming episodes", but when I search for Heroes, I see:

KNTV, 9/27, 8pm (repeat)
KNTV, 9/29, 9pm (first run)

Why isn't the season pass listing these at all?

This happened for Sarah Connor Chronicles too: it didn't record the first episode, and I had to re-add the season pass to get it to show up. The two season passes (old and new) looked exactly the same, at least according to the data that Tivo displays about them.

I am annoyed.

Update: Looks like almost all of my season passes are fucked, somehow. E.g., my season passes for Dexter and Californication were both showing no upcoming episodes until I re-added them (they both start later this week).

The "old" and "new" passes appear to have a different "series ID" number in the TivoWeb URL. I have no idea what that means.

continuing video fail. [Sun, 21-Sep-2008 7:44 PM]
[Tags|, , , ]
[music |Curve -- Want More Need Less]

A few hundred dollars later, my ongoing attempt to have my second monitor cloned onto my video projector is still made of fail. What am I doing wrong here?

My plan was this:

My plan fails in two ways:

  1. If I just do this:

then the monitor just sits there and flickers, trying to display a message about input being out of range. So clearly that splitter confuses the hell out of either the Mac or the monitor. I don't know which.

  2. And if I just do the second part:

I again get no signal on the projector. Sometimes I saw the projector displaying snow-crash; sometimes it appeared to be trying to lock on to various resolutions that were changing every 5 seconds; briefly, I saw something that appeared to contain the right colors in the static; and now it's decided to just always be black. Anyway, no worky. I tried all permutations of the various switches on the device, and all permutations of the 3 RCA cables.

Suggestions?

[music |Heartsrevolution -- Wolves and Libertines]

Today in "Will Ferrell's Eminently Punchable Face" news:

Universal has cut a deal to mount a live-action film based on Sid and Marty Krofft's '70s children's show Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Variety reported.

The deal comes after Universal and Mosaic completed production on the $100 million Will Ferrell film Land of the Lost, another property that originated as a Saturday morning Krofft creation. Land of the Lost is set for release in June.

The script for Sigmund will be penned by Dana Gould, a writer-producer on The Simpsons.

Sony is developing a live-action version of the Kroffts' H.R. Pufnstuff and is in talks with director Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2).

iMac and 3 monitors [Wed, 27-Aug-2008 9:04 PM]

[music |The Chemical Brothers -- The Test]

Dear Lazyweb, I have a 2008 iMac, and I have an external monitor attached to it via the Mini-DVI port (for a total of two screens). Let's say I would like to attach a second external monitor (for a total of three screens). Is there some Firewire or USB dingus that will let me do that?

Really, I'd be happy just splitting the Mini-DVI output, but I think it's been established that that isn't possible.
