Mechanical tumor: Mio I-zawa's "mechanical tumor" is a quivering hunk of fleshy, organic-looking material that expands and contracts depending on the amount of stress your computer is experiencing. Equipped with a series of motors and pneumatic actuators, the mechanical tumor pulsates gently when the CPU load is low. When the CPU load is high, the tumor's air compressor is activated, causing the lump of flesh to inflate. Other biologically inspired interactive devices by Mio I-zawa include "external heart," a squishy latex heart on wheels that beats and rolls around in sync with the user's pulse... ...and "elastic cell," a system of 46 soft pulsating cells that react to human touch in a complex, lifelike way. Previously, previously, previously. |

Staples and mirror, 180x80cm. Low-Rise is a precarious assemblage of thousands of free-standing stacks of staples densely tessellated to create a city-like mosaic. Like a city, the staples are subject to the elements, on a micro scale. The slightest breath or vibration and the domino effect kicks in. | |

The Fox Hardware on 4th always has great window displays. It's especially nice this month: And Whole Foods apparently employs some frustrated artists as well: |

Shepard Fairey's Laywer is a Ninja: Shepard Fairey, the visual artist who created the iconic "Hope" poster of Barack Obama, has filed suit against The Associated Press, according to court documents. Last week, The A.P. said in a statement that the poster, based on an A.P. photograph taken by Mannie Garcia in April 2006, requires its permission for use of the image, and that it is seeking credit and compensation for its use in Mr. Fairey's works. In the suit, lawyers for Mr. Fairey are seeking a declaratory judgment which would rule that Mr. Fairey's poster does not infringe on The A.P.'s copyrights and is protected by the Fair Use Doctrine. The complaint also seeks an injunction enjoining The A.P. from asserting its copyrights against Mr. Fairey, his company, Obey Giant, and anyone in possession of the poster or works derived from it, as well as a jury trial. Presumably this has something to do with the Mooninite Menace: Shepard Fairey was arrested Friday night on his way to the Institute of Contemporary Art for a kickoff event for his first solo exhibition, called "Supply and Demand." Two warrants were issued for Fairey on Jan. 24 after police determined he'd tagged property in two locations with graffiti based on the Andre the Giant street art campaign from his early career, Officer James Kenneally said. One of the locations was the railroad trestle by the landmark Boston University bridge over the Charles River, police said. |

Dear Lazyweb, I have finally decided what velvet painting to commission. But first I need to come up with an image for them to work from, and that's where I need your help. I want a picture of Giger's Alien, but I want him wearing a top-hat and monocle. Possibly sitting in an overstuffed chair. I seek the assitance of the lazyweb in finding a good source image of the alien onto which these other items can be easily photoshopped. I'm finding it surprisingly difficult to google up a picture of an alien with its head at a usable angle. |
