Ouch. Did the kid live?

Looks like he got her in the ribs/armpit, not the head. I can't imagine an 18" fall doing much more than some serious bruising.

But landing partially on the head can probably do nasty things if the bones of the spine are not yet fused properly.

It looks like most of the motion carried the body over the head, but some force probably went in. I wouldn't be surprised if the child was knocked out.

Wouldn't suprise me either... on the plus side, from now on when mom says "look both ways before crossing the street", the kid might actually consider doing so.

It's not the fall, it's the kick. She does a complete rag-doll backflip there. How much force do you think it would take to break a toddler's back?

That's a retorical question, I'm not asking for experimental data.

a friend of mine who does karate said that if you get knocked back, the kick is slow enough to transfer kinetic energy to your entire body. the fast ones just stop you cold.

captions:
mixed synchronized tumbling
now that i think of it, there *was* a specific moment my agoraphobia set in.
nice flip, gotta work on the landing.

No, but if any of your exposed skin touched the floor of the Port Authority subway station, a bacterial infection would kill you in minutes.

However, both myself and a friend once managed to sleep(!) on the floor in the bus terminal lobby without getting scabies. (New Years 2003 or so.)

They've really cleaned up the joint.

In the full clip, you can see child start to get up afterward. So it doesn't appear that she was even knocked unconscious.

Click jwz's picture, and it will take you to the full youtube video. You can see the child start to get up at the end.

As the owner of a six year old, I can attest that kids that size/age are quite floppy and tend to bounce, rather than smash.

Which is silly, because I'm fairly sure you and Mr Gore invented it a good fifteen years ago. Is fifteen years about right? Something like that anyhow.

What's the web? Do you mean the Information Superhighway? I heard about it from the town crier as my carriage rolled past.

If you look closely at the background of the video, there's a guy with a white container collecting donations from the crowd walking towards the mother of the kid.

The mother probably asked the kid to donate some money to the guy collecting donations, but the kid misunderstood the request and walked towards the dancer instead.

This probably also explains why the kid looks back towards the mother with her left arm outstretched.

"Is he the man to give the money to mommy?"

I could be wrong, but my guess is either the shaky camera work, or the baby being kicked and doing a backflip but not sticking the landing.

Don't they laugh at babies being kicked where you come from?

Aaand this is why I always chide scatterbrained parents to watch their children when out in public.

The world ain't kid-safe. Never will be. Parenting requires paying attention.
