The long out-of-print Urgh! A Music War will be showing on VH1C on Mon, Oct 30 at 6pm PST (9pm EST). They have it listed as "2 hours", which I hope means it's the 124-minute edit, not the 96-minute edit that ran on Sundance a few years ago. It would behoove you to record this, as it's probably the second-best concert film ever made. * Also, here's a decent documentary about Blade Runner (52 minutes). There's not a lot new in there if you've read Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner (which you should) but at 40:00, there's a deleted scene that I hadn't seen before of Deckard visiting Holden in the hospital.
Update: The VH1 showing was the same as the Sundance showing, except they omitted three more acts: Surf Punks, My Beach My Wave; The Cramps, Tear It Up; and Invisible Sex, Valium. Leaving out that Cramps performance was nuts -- it's one of the high points of the movie! Both showings omitted three other performances, which I haven't seen since the 80s: Gary Numan Down in the Park (he drove around the stage in a little bumper car!); Skafish, Sign of the Cross; and Splodgenessabounds, Two Little Boys.

I was just talking about Urgh with friends. There area couple of bootleg DVDs out there, from various sources. I'm guessing VH1 will show the 96 minute version, and will further cut it to something like 70 or 80 to make room for more pointless commercials about VH1.
Amazes me that neither Urgh nor Home of the Brave are on DVD yet. (At least I own HotB on VHS and pull it out for noobs when I want to scare them...)
There is a laserdisc rip of Home of the Brave - here. There was also a VCD rip of Urgh, but it seems like the torrent is dead now.

Still no luck with that, or with either copy on torrentspy. All three get stuck at "getting torrent info". I can download other torrents just fine, though. Can you put a copy somewhere for me to grab?

There's a few Blade Runner scenes that still haven't appeared anywhere, which I only saw one time when I was at the screening of the workprint at the Castro Theater in 1992. Little did I know at the time what an rare opportunity I was getting.
For some reason a lot of the magic was lost for me when Scott said that Deckard was a replicant himself. I mean, it wasn't exactly a shocking revelation having seen some of the script excerpts from the laser disc version. It also not like I didn't already believe it based on things in the theatrical release (made more obvious from the director's cut) but still... Its one thing to think that Santa Claus isn't real and entirely different when your parents actually tell you. Also, I have to agree Urgh was probably the 2nd or 3rd best concert-esque film ever. But I'd argue that Halber Mensch was probably #1 and Gwar's Live From Antartica was #3 ;)
Is Halber Mensch where the video for "Abfackeln!" came from?
Awesome, glad you mentioned this. I keep meaning to see it because of its Gary Numan footage.

Thanks for sharing that one. I'd seen the deleted scene before, but there was enough stuff I hadn't to make it worthwhile. I met Doug Trumbull at a conference earlier in the year where he was a keynote speaker - I really appreciated getting the chance to talk to someone who was not only doing state of the art visual effects back then, but is still interested in pushing the boundaries of technology today. Luckily we were too busy talking science for me to be much of a fanboy - he's definitely an inspiration to talk to, and not just because of what he's done in the past.
VH1C has commercials, so I agree with the above poster; I'd be surprised if this was the 124m cut...
And I'm glad to see that "The Last Waltz" isn't in your top three... Perhaps it's just because I'm not into it musically, but I just never found it that compelling and get annoyed when it comes up in conversations like this.. I personally think it only gets mileage because it was directed by Scorcese, so it "must be good". Your top three is great, although I'd probably swap "Home of the Brave" and "Stop Making Sense"...
Anyone know if "The Nomi Song" documentary that came out a year or two ago is worth renting?

A guy I work with is credited as part of the sound team for Laurie Anderson "Home of the Brave". And Urgh sounds pretty cool! I'll try to check it. | |
