Police in Germany are hunting pranksters who have been sticking miniature US flags into piles of dog poo in public parks.

Josef Oettl, parks administrator for Bayreuth, said: "This has been going on for about a year now, and there must be 2,000 to 3,000 piles of excrement that have been claimed during that time."

"We have sent out extra patrols to try to catch whoever is doing this in the act," said police spokesman Reiner Kuechler. "But frankly, we don't know what we would do if we caught them red handed."

Legal experts say there is no law against using faeces as a flag stand and the federal constitution is vague on the issue.

I imagine littering would be about the harshest crime they could be charged with.

If they were to be charged with 3000 counts of littering, I think that would really suck. Littering might be a small fine, but any fine multiplied by a few thousand isn't going to be nice.

They better setup a website to order the flags anonymously and free. That way when you're caught red handed, you can't be blamed for all of them.

No, something more anonymous. Like a fill in your address and we send flags. So you can fill it out for all your friends and they would suddenly be endowed with flags.

It's not litter, it's a yellow-and-black biohazard warning against illegally discarded dogshit (hereabouts we have pooperscooper laws).

It's Germany. Germans don't walk when the light says "Don't Walk" and THEY DON'T LITTER.

This cartoon of German culture has been brought to you by the bigots of Gutbloom Journal.

If they don't litter how'd the 3000 pieces of dog poo get there?

Certain small patches of park near the streets are designated "Hundeklo" - dog toilets.

While on the other hand, just about all of Nederland is fair game for pooing on, if you have a dog...

I wonder, do the Germans take those signs seriously? Or do they ignore them, and let their dogs poop wherever they please?

To be honest, i've never seen such a shield anywhere here in Germany *g*. Normally the dogs just shit on the sidewalk or in the grass as everywhere in the world ;)

Ah, but you see, there you are wrong, my very european friend :) So Germany follows the customs of both France and Nederland when it comes to dogshit, and I'm now guessing probably all of europe? Just let it all hang out.

In the New World, we do not tolerate people who let their dogs poop wherever they please. In New York, for instance, you must scoop the poop and put it in a trash bin, and if a cop catches you not scooping the poop, they will write you a ticket.

If you look at the laws on the books in most urban areas here, you will find some form of that NY "pooper scooper" law. People get very offended when they step into dogshit.

Maybe everything is different here ;D (i'm actually from the city where the flag thingy was/is happening)? No, maybe you get a ticket here, too, but it's sooo seldom that your run across a cop in a park that most people just ignore the rules.

What?!

Germans ignoring the rules? I'm confused. I thought rules were meant to be followed, exactly, to the letter, with absolutely no deviation.

Last time I walked dogs (in Sweden, if that makes a difference), I had a collection of not-too-large plastic bags for whatever the dog did and SOP for everyone was to stick one's hand into the bag, grab the poop with the bag and then turn the bag inside-out around it, tie off and throw in a poop-bin.

You sir, are to be commended. More importantly, thank you, for being considerate to your fellow pedestrians. I will never forget that snowy Nederland night, I had to clean out dogshit from the bottom of my shoes, because my mind was momentarily distracted and I stepped in the wrong place.

Are most Swedish people this considerate, or are you being odd?

So... are they sticking flags in poo that's already there? Or are they placing poo in the street? I mean, if the poo is already there, they're doing a public service by clearly marking the poo, and preventing people from stepping in it.
