To each his own, but I grew up in Maryland and always thought the cicaidas sounded great. I loved falling asleep to them.
my guess is they were set to "Stun"

A friend of mine worked on the "Gun out of the TV" effect", which I always thought was the coolest effect in the movie, even before I found out Rabbit (his nickname) worked on it. It might even be his hand you see...
