First iPhone worm discovered Apple iPhone owners in Australia have reported that their smartphones have been infected by a worm that has changed their wallpaper to an image of 1980s pop crooner Rick Astley. Once in place, the worm appears to attempt to find other iPhones on the mobile phone network that are similarly vulnerable, and installs itself again On each installation, the worm - written by a hacker calling themselves "ikex" - changes the lock background wallpaper to an image of Rick Astley with the message: "ikee is never going to give you up".

if one is to unlock and jailbreak their iPhone, one should expect to have no security what-so-ever. it is just a bsd box in your pocket after all.

ITYM "if one is to unlock and jailbreak their iPhone without read the documentation where you're told to change the default password then..."

Seems to only infect those users with a fatal case of Teh Dum. | (Link)

"The worm, which could have spread to other countries although we have no confirmed reports outside Australia, is capable of breaking into jailbroken iPhones if their owners have not changed the default password after installing SSH."

Yes, I did actually read the article I posted a link to.
It's still hilarious.

I don't consider using a default password as "breaking into".

I consider it "flagrant user error".

So the rtm worm didn't count? Interesting retcon.

So if someone leaves a car unlocked by mistake, you think you're entitled to steal the contents?

Well, this is slightly more akin to opening an unlocked car and dumping posters of Rick Astley in the back seat. Or slapping magnetic bumper stickers with pictures of Rick Astley over your existing bumper stickers. Or something.

Unlike a car, a computer actively participates in the transaction, actively providing services that the owner instructed (whether he intended to or not). The unlocked car fails to bar your entry; the computer succeeds in handing you control.
It's more like leaving your chauffeur with instructions to offer the car's contents to anyone who addresses him as Bob.
Style points to the first worm that changes the user's ring tone to "Never gonna give you up." Extra credit for video.
I love that it appears, from the code snippet, to also Rickroll your logfiles.
Interview with the author of the worm here. Kind of surprising to me that he wasn't concerned about getting in trouble. I hope no one in government decides to class him as a cyberterrorist.
(Which is not to say that he doesn't deserve a slap on the wrist.)
WASHINGTON, D.C. — November 11th, 2012
In a stunning victory that left pollsters scrambling for answers, Rick Astley was elected President of the United States. | |
