For those of you keeping track at home, that's a little over $1100 per foot. PER FOOT.

have you seen the cool fence crossing vehicles the smugglers have these days? It's an F-350 with a ramp up the bed reaching a height of 22 feet, and then back down over the cab and hood to the other side, hinging at it's highest point so it closes flat like a book over where the bed should be. Takes about 5 minutes to deploy and you can drive hundreds of 4x4 trucks over the ramp/fence an hour

Sure does look like a Dodge Ram under the bridge and a GMC Sierra crossing it - no F350 in sight.

Also doesn't look like it would clear the fence by any measure without knocking it over (even if we ignore that those legs would bury themselves in the sand immediately) - which would be just as easily accomplished by speeding towards the wall in any Baja 1000 buggy.

We can spend $6 million a mile to build a wall (that people are only going to dig under anyway) but we can't spend $5.5 million a mile to upgrade our passenger railways to high speed.

Remember, the fence to keep you from getting in for free is always taller than the fence to keep you from falling to your death.

Well, to be honest, there's a difference of motivation. A fence whose purpose is "keep you from doing something you want to do" has a different attack profile than a fence whose purpose is "keep you from doing something you don't want to do".

This border fence will fail regardless, if you think its goal is to keep smugglers out of the US. However, at its actual goal of "making money for the companies contracted to build and maintain it", it's a raging success.

You should see the other fences, where every couple of feet you see a patch where they just blow-torched their way through. Fences are pretty useless in that respect. The UAVs they use however, cost way more and are way more effective.
